LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Earlham College men's basketball team had four players in double figures on Wednesday night as the Quakers traveled to nationally-ranked Transylvania University.
The Pioneers (18-2, 12-1), who are ranked 18th in the latest d3hoops.com poll, won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair 89-76 to maintain the top spot in the league standings.
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) led the Quakers with 19 points, while
Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) and
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) added 16 points each.
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) finished with 14 points as he topped the squad with seven rebounds.
Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) had six points and led the Quakers with three assists.
Transylvania led 9-3 early in the contest and eventually built a 15-5 advantage by the 13:01 mark of the opening period.
Taylor led the charge as the Quakers got back into the contest. He hit a pair of 3-pointers with the second one making it 15-11 at 12:07.
The Pioneers went on a 10-4 run and went back in front 25-15 with 8:13 left in the first half.
The teams traded baskets and when Barger drilled a 3-pointer with 6:06 on the clock the Quakers trailed 32-22.
In the final seconds before halftime, Rusk scored to close the gap to 38-30 at intermission.
In the second half, Transylvania scored the first two baskets to lead 43-30 and the Pioneers eventually led 65-48 with 10:38 remaining in the game.
The Quakers answered with seven straight points to cut the deficit to 65-55 at the 8:12 mark.
Earlham was able get to within 10 points four more times with the last coming at 4:17 when Calder scored to make it 76-66.
The Quakers (0-20, 0-13) head back to the road on Saturday as they visit Hanover College. The HCAC game starts at 3 p.m.
