TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College men's basketball team battled the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the Mutchner Cup on Wednesday night and the Engineers kept the trophy with a 64-53 win.
Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led the Quakers with 14 points and seven rebounds in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest in the annual affair named after Earlham Hall-of-Fame member John Mutchner, who is the winningest coach in Rose-Hulman history. Rose-Hulman has a 7-4 advantage in the Mutchner Cup contests.
Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) tossed in 10 points to go with a team-high five assists.
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) ended with nine points.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) contributed six points and six rebounds.
The game was tight early. Bragg gave the Quakers an 8-6 lead with 8:59 left in the opening frame.
The Engineers (16-8, 10-7) bounced back to take the lead before Barger tied the game at 14-14 with 5:25 to go in the first half.
Rose-Hulman finished the half with a 16-7 run to build a 30-21 advantage by intermission.
In the second half, the Quakers were able to cut the deficit to six points in the early portion of the period twice with the latter occurrence coming at the 17:17 mark when Broderick scored to make it 34-28.
Later in the half, Earlham was able to trim the lead to six for the third time when Calder scored to make it 43-37 with 12:39 remaining.
However, the rest of the way the Engineers were able to maintain their distance to hold off the Quakers.
Earlham (2-22, 2-15) ends the season with Senior Day on Saturday against Manchester College. Barger, Calder,
Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) and
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) will be recognized before the HCAC contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center that gets underway at 3 p.m.
