RICHMOND, Ind. — A pair of Earlham College men's basketball players had career-best efforts on Wednesday night, but is wasn't enough as the Quakers fell 57-52 to Defiance College.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) and
Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) led the Quakers with 13 points each in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center. Both players also had four rebounds.
For Broderick, it was the highest scoring output of his career. His previous best was 12 points on several occiasions with the most recent being last month at Franklin College.
Kyle Calder (Crawfordsville, IN, North Montgomery) finished with 10 points, while
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) added eight points with a career-high 16 rebounds. It was the second time in his career that Barger reached double figures in rebounds. He had a 10-rebound effort against Manchester on Nov. 25, 2008.
Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) contributed six points and five rebounds.
Earlham built an early lead in the affair when Bragg scored to give the Quakers a 10-5 advantage with 14:10 left in the opening period.
Later in the frame, Barger followed with a basket at the 6:31 mark to put the Quakers on top 20-13.
Defiance (10-12, 6-9) was able to rally to tie the contest at 23-23 with 1:38 on the clock. Both teams added baskets and the game was knotted at 25-25 at intermission.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 32-27 lead with 16:39 left in the game before the Quakers rallied to take the lead.
Broderick hit a basket and then a free throw to put Earlham in front 33-32 with 14:54 remaining.
Calder scored to make it 35-32 at 14:34 before the Yellow Jackets responded to tie it at 35-35.
Broderick scored two baskets in a row to put Earlham back in the lead at 39-35 with 12:39 left.
Defiance answered by regaining the lead before Bragg tied the game for the eighth time at 46-46 with a basket at 7:58.
The Yellow Jackets again had an answered with a five-point run that gave them the lead for good. Calder scored to close the gap to 51-50 with 4:45 on the clock, but that was as close as the Quakers could get the rest of the way.
The Quakers (1-21, 1-14) return to action at home on Saturday against the College of Mount St. Joseph. The HCAC contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
