RICHMOND, Ind. — A pair of goals by Ryder Comstock proved to be the difference on Friday as the Earlham College women's soccer team opened the season with a victory.
Earlham defeated Capital University 2-1 in the El Rodeo Classic on Matlack Field.
"I'm pleased with the win," Earlham Head Coach Shane Meridith said. "We worked hard, but we need to continue to improve."
After a scoreless first period,
Comstock (Yellow Springs, OH, Yellow Springs) got the Quakers on the board at 48:13 with an assist from
Elizabeth Richards (Marysville, WA, Stanwood).
Capital tied the non-conference affair with a goal at 59:01.
The Quakers responded quickly to go back on top with an unassisted goal by Comstock at 59:31.
"It's always nice to get that first win," Comstock said. "We weren't particularly satisfied and we've got a lot of work to do."
For Comstock, it was the first time in her career that she had two goals in a match. She now has nine goals in her career.
When discussing the fans, Comstock and her teammates were thrilled.
"They were so great," Comstock said.
Capital had an 11-7 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashley (A.J.) Johnson (Columbus, OH, Ohio Virtual Academy) had three saves in her first collegiate contest for the Quakers.
Earlham (1-0) finishes play in the El Rodeo Classic at home on Saturday against Millikin University at 1 p.m.
