RICHMOND, Ind. — After having shots bounce off a post and off the cross bar, the Earlham College women's soccer team finally got a goal in the final moments on Wednesday.
Earlham's
Joy Doucette (Berwyn Heights, MD, Eleanor Roosevelt) found the back of the net at the 86:51 mark to give the Quakers a 1-0 non-conference victory over Denison University on Matlack Field.
"I was proud of our persistence," Earlham Head Coach Shane Meridith said. "We missed some early chances, but we kept pressing and we were able to score one late."
For Doucette, it was her fourth goal of the season and 31st in her career.
Both teams had three shots in the first half, but in the second period they were able to increase their opportunities.
The Quakers finished with a 15-12 edge in shots, while the Big Red (2-6-1) led 4-1 in corner kicks.
Earlham goalkeeper
Ashley (A.J.) Johnson (Columbus, OH, Ohio Virtual Academy) had four saves for the Quakers as she posted her second shutout of the season.
"Our backs and A.J. earned a shutout thanks to a real solid group effort," Meridith said.
The Quakers (4-4) open play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday at Franklin College. The contest gets underway at 5 p.m.
