RICHMOND, Ind. — Late free throws made the difference on Saturday as the Earlham College men's basketball team battled Franklin College into overtime.
Franklin made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute of the extra session to post at 73-69 win over the Quakers in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham fell behind early in the overtime before they rallied to tie the game at 62-62 when
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) scored at the 1:57 mark.
The Grizzlies (11-6, 6-4) took the lead for good with 1:42 to go as they made enough free throws to stay on top.
Tyler Lewers (Indianapolis, IN, Gary West) led the Quakers with 13 points, while Broderick and
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) tossed in 11 points each. Broderick also led the Quakers with seven rebounds.
Kirk Douglas (Cleveland, OH, John Hay) finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Vadial Jett (Richmond, IN, Richmond) led the Quakers with six assists.
Jack O'Flaherty (Sheridan, IN, Sheridan) had nine points.
Early Lead
The Quakers jumped out to an early 12-1 advantage when Broderick scored and hit a free throw at the 14:59 mark of the first half.
The Grizzlies responded and eventually pulled ahead 13-12 at the 9:47 mark.
Earlham was able to rally to lead 29-27 by intermission.
In the second half, Douglas scored the first five points of the frame as he gave the Quakers a 34-27 lead when hit nailed a 3-pointer with 18:18 left to play.
Franklin tied the contest at 46-46 with 5:46 to go. The Grizzlies built a 56-50 lead with 2:23 remaining.
Earlham came back when O'Flaherty hit a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left to tie game at 58-58.
After a Franklin turnover, the Quakers called timeout with 27 seconds on the clock. Earlham was able to get a shot off, but Blake Welch had his 3-point attempt blocked just before the buzzer to set the stage for overtime.
The Quakers (2-15, 1-9) visit Bluffton University on Wednesday. The HCAC game begins at 7:30 p.m.
