TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College men's basketball team opened the 2013 portion of its schedule at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday as the Engineers won 67-59.
Jack O'Flaherty (Sheridan, IN, Sheridan) led the Quakers with 16 points, while
Tyler Lewers (Indianapolis, IN, Gary West) added 15 points and three assists in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
Vadial Jett (Richmond, IN, Richmond) tossed in eight points and Dustin Rusk added seven points.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville) and
Kristian Barden (Detroit, MI, Pershing) led the Quakers with six rebounds each.
The Engineers (11-1, 5-0) grabbed an early 7-0 advantage before the Quakers were able to tie the contest at 10-10 when Lewers scored at the 13:14 mark.
Earlham took its first lead of the contest when O'Flaherty hit 1-of-2 free throws with 11:17 to go in the first period.
Both teams were able to hold small leads until the Quakers went on top 32-26 after Rusk nailed a 3-pointer with 4:02 left.
By intermission, the Quakers held a 34-31 lead over the top team in the conference.
In the second half, the Quakers were able to hang on to their lead when O'Flaherty hit a trey with 11:46 remaining.
Later in the frame at the 6:25 mark, Rose-Hulman brought the game to its sixth tie at 53-53.
From that point, the Engineers went in front 58-53 with 4:30 to go as they took the lead for good.
The Quakers (1-11, 0-5) entertain Manchester University on Saturday. The HCAC affair on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center starts at 3 p.m.
