Quakers Back in Second Place in the HCAC

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. â€" The Earlham College men's soccer team is on the verge of a trip to the post-season after Wednesday's 1-0 Senior Day victory over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

"It's just a tremendous effort, front of the team to back, I don't think we can do any better," Earlham Head Coach Roy Messer said of his squad's win on Matlack Field. "I want to particularly stress the job that Sam Embry did in the goal, he was just super."

"I don't really make that sort of that comment all that often, but this is one of the major differences in our year this year," Messer added. "Sam Embry's goalkeeping has been beyond what you could've expected. It was heroic, as a matter of fact."

Earlham is now 10-8 overall, but more importantly the Quakers are 6-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and in second place. Rose-Hulman (8-5-4, 5-1-2) went from the leading the conference to third place. Hanover College is on top in the standings at 6-1-1 with an overall mark of 10-6-2.

Transylvania University (11-4-2, 5-2-1) and Anderson University (9-9, 5-3) are also both still alive for the HCAC Tournament, which gets underway next week.

The Quakers would need a victory or a tie at the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday to clinch a spot in the tournament. The regular season finale starts at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Engineers led 11-10 in shots as Embry recorded nine saves to post his fifth shutout of the fall. Rose-Hulman also led 5-2 in corner kicks.

The decisive moment of the contest came at 58:53 when Ameer Yusuf scored his ninth goal of the season. Michael Nsoesie had the assist on the play.

Senior Day

During halftime, Earlham's seniors had a statement read thanking everyone for their support over the last four years.
