Quakers Beat Kenyon

Box Score GAMBIER, Ohio â€" Kirk Douglas may have missed the free throw with one second left, but he got the rebound and waited for the buzzer.

As the buzzer sounded, the Earlham College men's basketball team had defeated Kenyon College 86-84 on Monday.

"It was a great total team win," Earlham Head Coach Marcus Gill said. "We made some shots early, but I was so proud when they made their run in the second half and took the lead. We stayed poised and fought through it."

Michael Parker led the Quakers with 22 points, while Douglas tossed in 21 points with four assists.

Jack O'Flaherty added 19 points. Chris Holmes finished with nine points and six rebounds. Kristian Barden grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Kenyon led 6-3 early in the contest at the 18:11 mark before the Quakers were able to answer.

A 3-pointer by Douglas put the Quakers on top 7-6 with 16:31 to go in the opening period.

Parker eventually gave Earlham a 19-12 advantage with 10:42 remaining. The Lords responded to build lead 24-20 with 7:12 on the clock.

After O'Flaherty tied the game 26-26 with a 3-pointer at 6:13, Earlham ended the first half with a 48-39 lead.

In the second half, Douglas gave the Quakers their largest lead of the night when he scored and then followed with a free throw to make it 53-41 with 18:37 left.

Kenyon mounted a comeback to go in front 59-57 at 12:21. From that point, both squads held small leads until the Lords grabbed a 78-73 lead with 3:24 remaining.

The Quakers fought back and when Vadial Jett scored at 1:12 he gave his squad an 81-80 lead.

On Kenyon's next possession, the Quakers got a steal by Holmes. After a timeout, Douglas gave the Quakers an 83-80 advantage with 16 seconds left.

Kenyon scored to make it 83-82 to six seconds remaining. Jett hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left. Kenyon picked up another basket to set the stage for Douglas, who hit the first of his two free throw attempts.

Earlham (1-4) is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The Quakers open play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a trip to Bluffton University at 7:30 p.m.
