Quakers Fight With Engineers

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. â€" The Earlham College men's basketball team came up short in a battle with the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference leader on Wednesday night.

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology defeated Earlham 65-54 on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center. The Engineers are now 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the HCAC.

Kirk Douglas led the Quakers with 17 points and nine blocks. The nine blocks tied a school record for a game and that total put him at 66 rejects for the year, which establishes a new standard for a season. Eric England had nine blocks against Oberlin College in 1997, while posting his old school record total of 63 during the 1996-97 season.

Phillip Boone finished the night for the Quakers with 16 points. Alonzo Genelin added seven points, while Chris Holmes grabbed six rebounds.

Boone got Earlham started on Wednesday as he scored all of the points for the Quakers as they built a 14-5 advantage by the 16:30 mark of the opening frame.

Others finally got in the act for Earlham as Douglas, Michael Parker and Jack O'Flaherty all scored as the Quakers worked to a 21-7 lead by 13:11.

Parker followed with a 3-pointer to put Earlham on top 24-7 with 11:06 left to play in the first half.

The Engineers eventually cut the deficit to two points just before the intermission as the Quakers were able to go into the locker room up 31-27 at halftime.

In the second half, the Quakers were able to maintain their advantage, but foul trouble for Parker and Holmes would become a factor as the Engineers started to comeback.

Rose-Hulman took the lead for good with 12:28 left to play and the Engineers were able to keep their distance from the Quakers from that point.

The Quakers (4-16, 3-10) play at home against Hanover College on Saturday. The HCAC affair is scheduled for 4 p.m.
