Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Earlham College men's basketball team notched its first win of the 2015 season with an 80-66 triumph over Maine Maritime at Swarthmore College on Sunday.
Earlham got off to a quick start as sophomore Elijah Wilson-Thomas connected on two three-pointers to give the Quakers a 13-4 lead at the 14:26 mark of the first half. Maine Maritime scored the game's next seven points to cut Earlham's lead to two points.
The Quakers responded with a 14-6 run capped off by six straight points from Wilson-Thomas to take a double-digit lead with 5:47 to play in the first half. Earlham hit nine free throws in the final five minutes and took a 40-27 lead into halftime.
Freshman Alex Topalovic, senior Taylen Alexander, and Wilson-Thomas each scored buckets to begin the second half as Earlham's lead blossomed to 17 points (46-29) with 18:48 to play in the regulation.
The Mariners got within five points at 59-54 with 4:19 to play, but could get no closer.
Wilson-Thomas led all scorers with 24 points. Alexander (16) and junior Kamari Hunter (12) also finished in double figures.
Tyler Thayer led Maine Maritime with 19 points.
The Quakers shot 46.9 percent (23-49) from the field while the Mariners connected on 38.9 percent (21-54) of their field goals. Earlham hit seven triples while Maine Maritime nailed just two triples. Both teams hit over 20 free throws.
"I was really proud of our effort today," head coach Jason Polykoff said. "We completed the game plan from start to finish"
Earlham finishes the Garnet Holiday Tournament with a 1-1 record. The Quakers return to action on Dec. 29 at Wittenberg.
