RICHMOND, Ind. – Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) relied on a balanced scoring attack and a 58.3 shooting percentage from the floor to defeat the Earlham College men's basketball team 84-51 at Schuckman Court on Saturday.
All five Lions finished in double figures with Travis Combs and Joel Scudder leading the way with 15 points each. Senior Taylen Alexander was the lone Quaker to finish in double figures with 10 points.
Earlham started the contest well as Alexander hit an off-balance three-pointer with the shot clock winding down, giving the Quakers an 8-3 lead six minutes into the contest.
MSJ would tie the game at 8-8 and eventually take a 17-14 lead on back-to-back baskets from Erik Edwards. The Lions then showed why they are atop the HCAC standings, going on a 25-9 run to end the first half leading 42-26.
Mount St. Joseph opened the second half on a 15-4 run, putting the game out of reach.
Earlham shot 18-53 (34 percent) from the floor, 5-20 (25 percent) from three-point land, and 10-13 (76.9 percent) from the free throw line. To go along with MSJ's 58.3 shooting percentage, the Lions connected on 8-20 (40 percent) shots from distance and 20-25 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.
MSJ held a slight 30-28 edge in rebounding.
The Quakers return to action at home on Wednesday against Rose-Hulman. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
