RICHMOND, Ind. – Rose-Hulman shot 49.2 percent from the field and defeated the Earlham College men's basketball team 79-70 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Schuckman Court on Wednesday.
Five Fightin' Engineers finished in double figures with Luke Callahan leading the way with 16 points. Freshman Chainey Zolman led the Quakers with 14 points. Earlham featured a balanced scoring attack as four other played finished with at least seven points.
The early portion of the first half was hotly contested as the lead changed hands seven times in the first nine minutes. Rose-Hulman (8-8, 5-4 HCAC) led by as many as 16 (34-18) in the first half, but Earlham ended the half on a 9-3 spurt and trailed by a dozen at the break.
The Quakers scored the first five points of the second half and trailed by just seven, but the Engineers would stretch their lead to 20 points (64-44) with 9:48 to play in regulation. Earlham had cut to nine points on a three-pointer from Nick Sands with seven seconds left, but time ran out on the Quakers.
Earlham shot a respectable 40.6 percent (26-64) from the floor in the contest with nine of those field goals coming from long distance. Rose-Hulman led a slight 41-36 edge in rebounding.
Both teams dished out 14 assists with Rose-Hulman committing 14 turnovers to Earlham's 12.
The Quakers begin the second round of conference play on Saturday at home against Manchester. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
