FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Earlham College men's basketball team's rally from 17 points down fell just short in a 76-68 loss at Franklin College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Saturday.
The Quakers trailed 35-30 at halftime, but scored just seven points over the first seven minutes of the second half. A Franklin three-pointer five minutes later boosted the Grizzlies lead to 54-37 with 12:22 to play in regulation.
Earlham battled back to within six points 66-60 with two minutes to play, but a Brett McCory jumper gave Franklin an eight-point advantage. Back-to-back triples from freshman Blake Bonin cut the Grizzly lead to just five at 73-68, but the Quakers simply ran out of time as Franklin hit free throws over the final 20 seconds to secure the win.
Freshman Thomas Sanborn led Earlham offensively with a career-high 15 points on 5-8 shooting. Sophomores Nick Sands and Darrell Hutchison tallied 14 and 12 points respectively. Freshman Tarig Eldosougi finished with a career-high 14 rebounds off of the bench.
Jon Beineke led the Grizzlies with 14 points and nine rebounds. Aaron Mann, who came into the game leading the HCAC in scoring at 20.8 points per game, was held to 4-11 from the field and eight points.
Earlham finished 21-65 (32.3 percent) from the field including 10-24 from three-point range. Franklin made 26-59 (44.1 percent) field goal attempts. Both teams finished with 43 rebounds.
The Quakers return to action next Saturday against Manchester University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
