RICHMOND, Indiana - Junior Yuki Adams netted the game-winning goal 53 seconds into overtime lifting the Earlham College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Franklin College on senior day on Saturday.
Earlham outshot Franklin 11-3 in the first half, but neither team could score. Early in the second half, it would be the Grizzlies that scored first as Sam Stallsmith fired a low shot to the right corner past Earlham goalkeeper, junior Nicola Manni.
Trailing 1-0, it seems as if the Quakers' homecoming weekend, senior day and dedication of Matlack-Messer Stadium would be spoiled until freshman Joel Michael Nti-Kyeremeh tied the game in the 83rd minute. Each team took two shots in the final five minutes, but neither squad could provide the game-winning goal in regulation.
The overtime period lasted exactly 53 seconds as Adams fired the only shot of the period, a low strike to the corner that sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy.
Earlham held a 21-10 edge in shots including a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Nicholas Dey led the offensive charge individually with seven shots including two on goal. Adams, Nti-Kyeremeh and sophomore Padgett Gustavson all took three shots.
The Quakers improve to 3-11-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the HCAC with the win. Earlham travels to Transylvania University on Wednesday before ending the regular season at Manchester University on Saturday.
