RICHMOND, Indiana - Heidelberg University scored two first-half goals to defeat the Earlham College men's soccer team 2-0 in the first game played at the new Matlack-Messer Stadium on Friday evening.

Heidelberg opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Kiki Alvarado's corner kick found the head of Cory Gilbert at the far post. Leading 1-0 the Student Princes kept the pressure on and ultimately doubled their lead when Alexis Mendoza pounced on a loose ball on in the box.

Earlham, which trailed 2-0 at halftime, was outshot by Heidelberg 10-3 in the first 45 minutes while also yielding three corner kicks.

Neither squad would score in the second half, though Joseph Tallarico came inches away from extending the visitor's lead when his shot glanced off the post in the 52nd minute. The Quakers mounted an attack in the final 10 minutes as three of the squad's eight shots were taken during that time. Unfortunately, none of them bested Heidelberg netminder Jake Kress, who earned the shutout victory by making two saves.

Junior goalkeeper Peter Kashatus took the loss for Earlham as he allowed both goals in his 45 minutes of action. Freshman Chima Ndukwu played the second half and did not allow a goal while making two saves.

Junior Yuki Adams took three shots for the Quakers while freshman Drew Fitzgibbon fired two shots.

Earlham (0-1-0) has a quick turnaround as it hosts Oberlin College tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m.
