Four players post double-digit kills in win over Defiance

Box Score

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Four different Quakers recorded double-digit kill totals to lead Earlham College volleyball to a 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 21-25, 26-24) win over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Defiance College, on Wednesday evening at the Karl H. Weaner Center.

Earlham improved to 14-7 overall with the victory, assuring the Quakers of a winning season for the third-straight year. The triumph over Defiance also allowed the Maroon and White to even its HCAC record at 2-2. Defiance slipped to 13-9, 1-3 HCAC, with the loss.

Junior outside hitter Julia Stewart led the Quakers with 16 terminations on 42 attacks for a .310 hitting percentage, to go with two service aces and one block solo for a team-high 19.0 points.

Sophomore pin hitters Sarah Dickman and Caroline Mulvihill each had 15 kills on the night, while sophomore Abbey Zanatta charted 13 kills.

Mulvihill and Stewart finished with 23 and 21 digs respectively. Senior setter Lauren Jackson recorded 54 assists, running an Earlham offense that overcame 23 attack to hit .209 for the match.

Defiance's Delaney Monnin had a match-high 26 kills on 64 swings for a .328 attack clip.

After winning the first set by four points thanks to a late surge, Earlham captured the second set by outlasting a persistent Defiance squad.

The Quakers led through most of set two, and were up by six, 22-16, coming down the stretch. Kills by Caroline Mulvihill and Sarah Dickman got Earlham to set point, 24-19, but the Quakers were unable to finish off the set and the Yellow Jackets won six straight points to take a 25-24 lead. With the score at 26-26, kills by Mulvihill and Dickman finally allowed Earlham to clinch the set and go up 2-0.

After Defiance rallied to take set three off Earlham, the Yellow Jackets managed to grab a lead late in set four and were on set point, 24-21, following a Mackenzie Umbaugh kill. This time it was Earlham that rallied for the win, capturing the next five points to complete the 3-1 victory. Stewart put down the match-point termination, off the serve of senior Sydney Ameluxen.

Earlham volleyball returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when it hosts Manchester University in an HCAC match. Game time at the Druley Performance Gym is slated for 1:00 p.m.
