Men's soccer drops heartbreaker at home to Manchester

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – Earlham College men's soccer dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to visiting Manchester University, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday at Matlack-Messer Stadium.

The Spartans' Leo Rees scored the game's only goal in the 40th minute when he won a foot race on a loose ball and beat Quaker keeper Henry Wildes to the lower left corner.

Earlham's best chance to get the equalizer came in the 87th minute when sophomore Andrew Belec got a shot away that was stopped by Spartan keeper Justin Winterboer. Jon Todd's attempt on Winterboer's loose rebound caromed hard off the post, and Caleb Wilgen's effort off that rebound was blocked by a Manchester defender.

Wildes finished the game with five saves on Manchester's 11 total shots taken, while Winterboer also charted five saves on 10 Earlham attempts.

Earlham finished the 2019 season with a 4-12-2 overall record, the most wins for the Quakers since the 2016 campaign. The Quakers were 3-6-0 in the HCAC and finished seventh in the conference standings.
