Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The Earlham College men's basketball team opened its season with a thrilling 102-94 overtime victory over Adrian College.
Earlham (1-0) made the first basket of the game by junior Jamel Barnes Jr. A field goal by Adrian's Robert Warrick tied the game with 18:56 to go in the first half before the Quakers went on a 7-0 run with 16:56 minutes left in the first half. Earlham shot 15 of 23 from the floor in the first half for 65.2 percent while Adrian shot 13 of 31 for 41.9 percent. The Quakers led at halftime 39-30.
The Quakers scored four straight points to start the second half for the largest lead of the game at 14 points. Adrian (0-1) shot 17-26 in the second half for 65.4 percent while Earlham shot just 12 of 32 for 37.5 percent. Each team committed 13 fouls apiece and each team got to the free throw line at least 12 times. With 08:34 minutes to go in the second half, the Quakers led 68-55. The Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run that shrunk the lead to just three before the Quakers hit a 3-point shot by senior Thomas Sanborn late in the shot clock to put the Quakers up 71-65 with 05:35 to go.
Earlham increased the lead to 76-68 with 03:01 to go before the Bulldogs went on another run 6-0 run to make the score 76-74. Barnes Jr. was fouled with 18 seconds to go and missed the front end of the one-and-one. He hit the second to make the score 77-74. Adrian's Jordan Harris attempted a three-point shot with six seconds that bounced off the rim and he got his own rebound to shoot another three-point shot that was nothing but net with one second left in regulation.
In overtime, senior Chainey Zolman hit a three-point attempt 25 seconds in to set the tone. Zolman scored nine of his 23 points in overtime while fellow senior Blake Bonin scored nine of his 23 points in overtime as well. The difference in overtime was free throws. The Quakers shot 14 free throws while making 13. Adrian shot zero. The Bulldogs committed seven personal fouls to zero for the Quakers. Earlham shot four of five from the field including four three pointers that proved to be a successful offensive eruption scoring 25 points in five minutes.
Earlham starters accounted for 84 of the 102 total points. Sanborn came off the bench and scored 18 points to round out the offense.
The Bulldogs were led by Harris. He scored 31 points, 13 assists and five assists while shooting 12 of 23 from the field.
Earlham will be back in action on Wednesday, November 13 when they host Denison University at 7:00 p.m.
