Men's hoops falls at HCAC rival Franklin

FRANKLIN, Indiana – Franklin College pulled away from visiting Earlham College men's basketball in the first half and held the Quakers at bay over the remainder of the game, and the Maroon and White came away from the Spurlock Center with an 82-63 loss to the Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon.

THE SHORT STORY

Franklin jumped out to a quick lead with a 10-2 run over the first five minutes of the contest, with the Grizzlies lead stretching as far as 19 points, 34-15, with 3:20 remaining in the opening frame on a layup from FC's Kyle Meyer. The Quakers reeled in the Grizzlies somewhat with back-to-back 3-pointers by AJ White and Jamel Barnes Jr., and Earlham was down 39-27 at the intermission.

In the second half, Franklin shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from the floor while holding Earlham to 41.4 percent (12-of-29), and the Quakers were unable to gain any ground on the Grizzlies over the final 20 minutes of play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Two Earlham players finished in double figures: senior Chainey Zolman with 17 points, and Barnes with 11 points to go with four assists. White led the Quaker bench with eight points.

Blake Bonin paced the Quakers on the glass with five rebounds and completed his stat line with four assists and five points.

Both Earlham and Franklin splashed 11 3-pointers for the game, but the Grizzlies (17-for-22) had a huge advantage at the free throw over the Quakers (8-for-13).

Earlham finished the day with 42.3 percent (22-of-52) shooting while Franklin logged a 54.0 field goal percentage (27-of-50).
