Sharp-shooting Transylvania squad downs Earlham men's hoops at home

RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College men's basketball had no answers for a Transylvania University squad that connected from everywhere on the floor, and the Quakers fell to the visiting Pioneers, 90-71, on Wednesday night at the Druley Performance Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A 13-2 Transy run early in the first half put the Pioneers in control of the game early, with the lead reaching 16-4 at the 14:25 mark on a pair of Will Sivills free throws. Transylvania's lead ranged from seven to 15 points over the remainder of the half, and the Pioneers held a 50-37 advantage heading into the intermission.

Another 13-2 run by the Pioneers to open the second half extended Transy's lead to 63-39, with a Jamel Barnes Jr. layup providing the points for the Quakers. Transylvania's advantage reached its widest at 86-60 with 3:47 showing on the game clock, following buckets from Brandon Cromwell and Spencer McKinney.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Senior Chainey Zolman went 7-of-17 from the floor on his way to 24 points, with three 3-pointers and a 7-of-8 mark at the free-throw line.  He added 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double and his third of the season. Zolman was joined by Barnes (11 points), and Kenneth Stalling Jr. and Elijah Galloway (10 points each) as double-digit scorers for the Quakers.

Barnes dished out a team-high five assists, while Blake Bonin had four assists.

Gabe Schmitt led Transy with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Lucas Gentry chipped in with 20 points and completed the double-double with 11 rebounds.

Earlham was held to just 37.5 percent (21-of-56) shooting on the night, while Transy fired at a 52.3 percent (34-of-65) clip from the floor with 12 3-pointers. The 12 treys were tied for the second-most this season for the Pioneers.

Earlham men's basketball is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8, when it hosts Hanover College at the Druley Performance Gym. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
