RICHMOND, Indiana – In Friday's first go-round between Earlham College men's basketball and Manchester University, the Quakers amassed a 14-point second-half lead but were unable to hold on for the victory.
Saturday's rematch against Manchester again saw Earlham build a huge second-half advantage – but this time the Quakers closed the deal convincingly.
A 22-point effort from newcomer
Xavier Barbel and a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds by
Jamel Barnes Jr. led Earlham to a 71-53 win over Manchester at the Druley Performance Gym, in the Quakers' home debut.
Earlham (1-1) led by as much as 16 points, 38-22, in the first half before settling in for an 11-point lead at the intermission.
Manchester (2-1) rallied midway through the second half to cut the Earlham lead to 44-41 with 12:27 remaining, before a conventional three-point play by Barnes began to swing the momentum back in the Quakers' favor.
The Quakers closed out the game with a 13-2 run, including seven points by Barbel, to clinch the win.
Earlham shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the floor on its way to the victory, including a 7-of-18 mark from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Quakers held the Spartans to 36.7 percent (18-of-49) shooting with six treys. The Maroon and White also dominated the boards, 38 to 29.
Three Earlham players scored in double figures with
Josh Ozanne (13 points) joining Barbel and Barnes. Newcomer
Tommy Makabu dished out nine assists.
Manchester also had three scorers crack double digits led by CJ Hampton with 17 points.
Earlham men's basketball returns to action on Friday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Blufton University. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m., after the women's game which is slated for 5:00 p.m.
