RICHMOND -- The Earlham College field hockey team took its second loss of the 2021 season and first loss at home with a 2-1 match against Kenyon in Darrell Beane Stadium.
The Quakers fell to 12-2 (3-1 NCAC) while the Ladies improved to 10-4 (4-1 NCAC).
Denise Bergdolt moved herself into fourth place in program history by scoring her 11th goal of the season in the 12th minute. Bergdolt was assisted by
Molly McKellar on their penalty corner play which has contributed greatly to Bergdolt's goal count on the season.
Two minutes later, the Ladies equalized with a goal of their own on a long breakaway attempt.
Kenyon took two more shots in the second quarter and held the majority of possession, while the Earlham offense struggled to get any kind of pressure going.
In the 23rd minute, Grace Lane of Kenyon intercepted a pass in the Quaker defense and managed to carry the ball through the back line and toward the goal where she scored her second of the game.
Both teams played stout defense in the third quarter, where neither squad managed a legitimate attempt on the goal.
The Quakers ramped up the offensive pressure in the final frame of play. The home team took two shots within two minute of the period starting. Despite pulling the goalkeeper to bring an extra player into the attack for the final three minutes, Earlham was unable to score an equalizing goal.
Meg Murphy recorded one save as the starter in the cage.
The Quakers will look to rebound at Denison on Thursday as the Quakers take on the Big Red in NCAC competition. The contest is slated for 7 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
