RICHMOND -- The Earlham College women's soccer team ended its 2021 season with a 5-0 win over Defiance College on senior day in Matlack-Messer Stadium. The Quakers honored six seniors prior to kickoff for their contributions to the team over their four years at Earlham.
The Quakers finish their season 4-10-1 (3-5-1 HCAC) while the Yellow Jackets finish 2-13 (0-9 HCAC).
The Quakers earned a seventh place finish in the final Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with the win.
Tess Cunningham scored the first goal for the Quakers in the 12th minute of action.
Eva Lyon sent Cunningham on a through ball into the Defiance penalty area where Cunningham beat the defense with her speed and slotted a shot underneath the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper for the score.
Senior
Nicole Burkett scored the first of her three goals in the contest in the 52nd minute when she intercepted a Defiance goal kick and brought it back at the goal. She beat the goalkeeper to the far right side of the net for the score.
Burkett struck again in the 60th minute after she collected the rebound of a shot by
Makayla Hurey.
Burkett's final goal of the contest came in the 65th minute. Burkett was sent wide on a pass from
Jenna Hoeh and took a left-footed shot that went past the diving goalkeeper for Defiance.
The final goal of the contest came from
Eva Lyon in the 75th minute. Lyon found herself surrounded by Yellow Jacket defenders deep in the attack. She took a touch out to the right side to get some space and unleashed a shot on goal that would beat the goalkeeper for the score.
The Quakers took 54 shots, 36 of which were on goal and did not allow Defiance an opportunity on the goal. Earlham also led 11-0 in corner kicks with dominant possession throughout the game.
