DEFIANCE, Ohio – Earlham College women's basketball was unable to sustain its solid first-half shooting performance over the final two quarters, and fell to Defiance College, 52-49, on Friday night at the Weaner Center.
Earlham had a chance to snare the victory late in the game after pulling to within one point of Defiance, 50-49, on a Kayla Bowling 3-pointer with 2:05 remaining.
However, the Quakers managed to get away just two more field goal attempts over the remainder of the game, and the Yellow Jackets successfully outrebounded Earlham over the final two minutes to maintain their lead. Individual free throws by Kylie Brinkman and Nicole Sims in the final 10 seconds helped ice the win for Defiance.
Earlham (13-29 FG-A, .448 FG%) held a 31-28 lead at the halftime break after outshooting Defiance (8-24 FG-A, .333 FG%) over the first two quarters.
Bowling led Earlham with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Marissa Quiroz and Shae Stanley each garnered nine points. Rosie Newhart grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for the Quakers, while Bowling, Quiroz, and Newhart each had four assists.
Briana Townley charted 12 points and six rebounds for Defiance, while Brinkman and Kalyn Pickens each tallied nine points.
Earlham women's basketball will complete the two-game series with Defiance College on Saturday, Feb. 12, when it hosts the Yellow Jackets at 7:30 p.m. at the Druley Performance Gym. No fans will be permitted at the game under Earlham College COVID-19 policies and HCAC return to play protocols.
