TERRE HAUTE, Indiana – With the Quakers' hopes for a post-season berth on the line, Earlham College women's volleyball prevailed over Rose-Hulman in a must-win match on Wednesday night at Hulbert Arena. Earlham dispatched the Fightin' Engineeers 25-18, 25-17, and 25-23, remaining tied for second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with one conference match remaining on the schedule.
Junior outside hitter
Sarah Dickman paced Earlham with 12 kills, while outside hitter
Caroline Mulvihill and opposite
Maria Young each charted eight terminations. Mulvihill added a pair of service aces.
Jennifer Shamel sprawled for 21 digs while setter
Erin Wagner turned up 12.
Wagner guided the Quakers to a .230 hitting percentage, recording 34 assists in the process.
Elizabeth Canon was Rose-Hulman's top offensive producer with nine kills with one service ace.
Earlham dominated the first two sets, hitting .243 and .275 respectively in the first two stanzas. The Quakers began pulling away from the Engineers halfway through the first set on a pair of 3-0 scoring runs, and used a five-point run off Wagner's serve to control the second set.
The Maroon and White used a six-point run with
Giselle Mora serving to take a 15-10 lead in the third set, but the Fightin' Engineers clawed their way back into the set. The set was tied at 23-23 when a service error by Rose-Hulman's Allie Fults put Earlham on match point, and Young's ace closed things out in the Quakers' favor.
Earlham volleyball returns closes out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20, when the Quakers host Franklin College. Start time for the doubleheader will be 1:00 p.m. No spectators will be permitted.
