RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College women's volleyball extended its winning streak to four-in-a-row with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Defiance College, Tuesday night at the Druley Performance Gym. The Quakers won the night's opening match by a 3-2 score (25-19, 18-25, 17-25, 25-12, 15-8) to post a win in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, before finishing off the night with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-18) dismantling of the Yellow Jackets in match no. 2.
Match 1
After falling behind 2-1 over the first three sets, Earlham proved to be the model of hitting efficiency in sets four and five to keep Defiance at bay and post the HCAC victory.
The Quakers hit .414 with 15 kills on 29 attacks in set four, and an equally impressive .385 in set five with 11 terminations on 26 swings.
Sarah Dickman led Earlham (4-4, 2-2 HCAC) with 21 kills with a .386 attack percentage, including eight kills on 14 swings in the fourth set.
Maria Young and
Giselle Mora finished the match with 14 and 12 kills respectively, with
Sydney Fuller charting five kills and three total blocks.
Setter
Erin Wagner guided the Earlham offense to a .240 hitting percentage for the match, recording 42 assists in the process to go with a team-high 18 digs.
Mackenzie Benham paced Defiance with 12 kills while Olivia Rayk and Riley Davis each tacked on 10 terminations.
Match 2
The Quakers hit .292 for the match in the nightcap, while holding Defiance to a .064 attack percentage.
Dickman again paced the Earlham attack with 13 kills on 29 swings with only two errors, with one service ace and three total blocks. Young and Wagner had 14 and 12 assists respectively, with Wagner also pacing the defense with 13 digs.
Fuller charted four service aces to go with four kills and one block.
Defiance used more of its bench in match two, with 15 different Yellow Jackets seeing the floor. Morgan Porter logged five of Defiance's 20 kills in the match.
Earlham volleyball returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when the Quakers travel to North Manchester, Indiana, to face Manchester University. Match one of the series will start at 11:00 a.m.
