Baseball splits doubleheader with Anderson

RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College took a split out of its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Anderson University on Saturday, winning game one of the twinbill, 4-3, before falling the nightcap, 6-3.

GAME 1
Anderson manufactured two runs in the top of the second inning on two hits, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly, but Earlham answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Connor Drews drove in two of the Quaker runs with a two-run home run to left field, while Maxwell Fries scored on a wild pitch earlier in the frame.

The Quakers tacked on what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fifth. Nathan Lancianese got aboard with a two-out walk, stole second, and came home on Marc Gendreau's base hit to left field, extending Earlham's lead to 4-2.

The Ravens got one run back in the eighth on Tyler Smitherman's RBI single, and were looking for more runs with bases loaded with one out. Anderson's rally effort was cut short on Branton Sanders' fly ball to left field for out number two, and Earlham left fielder Connor Drews completed the double play with a throw to home to get Jason Hall-Manley out at the plate for the final out of the inning.

Earlham starter Joey Gerbus improved to 2-0 with the victory, after fanning four Raven batters and spreading around seven hits over seven innings of work. Reliever Domanick Michael pitched the eighth and ninth innings and struck out three while allowing three hits.

Drews finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Gendreau went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Graham Reedy led Anderson at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance with two runs scored.

The win over Anderson was the Quakers' first victory over the Ravens since the 2017 season, and the first at home since 2016.

GAME 2
An RBI single from Isaiah Shake gave Earlham a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Anderson took the lead with a two-run second inning.

The Ravens put up three runs in the fourth inning on four walks and a two-run base hit off the bat of Jonathan Willoughby, extending their lead to 5-1, and added a sixth run in the sixth inning.

Earlham got two runs back in the seventh by taking advantage of Andrew Bradley's leadoff single to left field, and a fielding error that allowed Michael Medley to get aboard on a grounder to third. Bradley eventually crossed on a second Anderson error in the frame, with Medley coming home on a base hit by Drews.

Justin Dillhoff started for Earlham and was charged with the loss in his three innings of work. Anderson's Kasey Henderson went seven-and-a-third on the mound and finished with eight strikeouts.

Robby Shondel went 2-for-4 to lead the Quakers at the plate while five other Earlham players had one hit apiece. Both Earlham and Anderson finished the game with 10 runners left on base.

NEXT UP:
Earlham returns to action on Sunday, March 21, when it travels to Terre Haute, Indiana, to face Rose-Hulman in a doubleheader. First game of the twinbill will start at 1:00 p.m.
