Baseball falls to Transy in a pair of shortened games

SCORES: G1 – Transylvania 15, Earlham 0 (7 inn.) / G2 – Transylvania 11, Earlham 2 (5 inn.-rain)
LOCATION: Richmond, Indiana – Randal R. Sadler Stadium
RECORDS: Earlham 15-9 / Transylvania 16-7

RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College baseball struggled to get its bats going in Sunday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Transylvania University and dropped a pair of games to the Pioneers at Sadler Stadium. Transy won the first game of the twinbill, 15-0, in seven innings, and then swept the doubleheader with an 11-2 win in a rain-shortened five-inning affair in game two.

GAME 1
Earlham managed just three hits in game one while Transylvania plated 15 runs on 15 hits, and took advantage of three Quaker errors in the contest.

Devyn Wilson-Cowan belted a solo home run in the Transy second inning to put the Pioneers on the board.

The Pioneers pushed across six runs in the top of the third on six hits and an error, with Riley Willbur's base hit to left field plating two of the runs. Nick Wade's two-run single into center keyed a three-run fourth inning for Transy, and the Pioneers scored three more runs in the fifth including two runs on Wade Lopiccolo's triple to right.

Danny Dopp doubled in the Earlham fourth for the Quakers' only extra-base hit of the game.

Starter Aidan Talarek lasted two-and-a-third innings on the mound and was charged with the loss. Transy starter Robby Arnett went the distance in the seven-inning affair, striking out eight Earlham batters.

GAME 2
Transy again jumped out to an early lead with a three-run second inning, but Earlham got one of those runs back in the home half of the frame when Isaiah Shake scored on a wild pitch after getting aboard with a double.

The teams traded runs in the third inning, making the score 4-2 in Transy's favor. Michael Blair homered for the Pioneers, while Cameron Wissel got aboard with a triple to right-center and later crossed on groundout to short.

Transylvania scored five runs in the fourth, two of those on Wade's double to right field and two more on Wilson-Cowan's blast over the center field fence for his second home run of the day, extending the Pioneers' lead to 9-2.

Earlham issued five walks in the top of the fifth to give Transy two more runs, advancing the score to 11-2. The game was stopped after five innings due to rain.

Justin Dillhoff had the start on the mound for Earlham went two-and-a-third innings, and was charged with the loss. Jared Leuthart picked up the win for the Pioneers.

NEXT UP:
Earlham baseball will play five straight games on the road before returning to Sadler Stadium, starting with a single game at Manchester University on Wednesday, April 14. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.
