RICHMOND, Indiana – Big innings were the order of the day as Earlham College and Manchester University split their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Sadler Stadium.
In game one, Earlham capitalized on 14 hits with a late five-run uprising on its way to a 9-1 rout of visiting Manchester, extending the Quakers' winning streak to four games.
The winning streak was extinguished in the second game of the twinbill with Manchester topping Earlham 10-6. The Spartans had 13 hits in the second game, six of those in a nine-run seventh inning. The Quakers answered with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh, part of an 11-hit performance at the plate for the Maroon and White.
GAME 1
The Quakers posted a single run in the first inning and extended their lead to 4-0 in the third on
Brian Pincura's three-run home run over the "Maroon Monster" in left field, plating
Marc Gendreau and
Connor Drews.
Manchester broke Earlham's shutout bid with a run in the fifth inning when Alex Morr singled home Michael Pinarski, who reached on a double.
Earlham put the game beyond reach with a five-run eighth inning.
Danny Dopp drove in two runs with his double to left field, while
Austin Hatfield plated Dopp with a double of his own into left.
Starter
Aidan Talarek lasted six innings on the mound and charted eight strikeouts while scattering eight hits in the win.
Domanick Michael earned his fifth save of the season after coming into the game with two runners on and no outs in the eighth inning, and retiring the next three batters to get the Quakers out of a jam.
Hatifield finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in, while Pincura was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. Dopp, Gendreau, and
Christian Lancianese each had two hits to aid the Earlham cause, as the Quakers finished the day with 14 hits.
GAME 2
Manchester broke a 1-1 game wide open with a nine-run outburst in the top of the seventh to take a 10-1 lead. The Spartans plated two runs on Zach White's double down the right field line, and Brett Kron doubled home two more runs later in the frame. Michael Pinarski capped the inning with a three-run shot to left field for the Spartans.
Earlham rallied with five runs in the home half of the frame.
Christian Lancianese stroked a double to left center to bring
Andrew Bradley and
Isaiah Shake across, and Gendreau singled home Lancianese on his ensuing at bat. Two more Quaker runs crossed on mishandled third strike calls, cutting the Manchester lead to 10-6.
Manchester reliever Keegan Stevens, who entered the game to record the final Earlham out in the seventh, retired the Quakers in order in the eighth and ninth innings to quash any further Earlham rally efforts and earn the save. Pinarski, who started the game on the mound for the Spartans, yielded six runs on 10 hits, but also fanned eight Quakers to get the win.
Drews finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate while Gendreau was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
