Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. - Facing the No. 14 ranked team in the nation, the Earlham College volleyball squad battled, but fell 25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 28-26 to Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, Sept. 1.
Maria Young led the Quakers with 14 kills in the season opener for both teams, while
Sarah Dickman finished with eight with
Caroline Mulvihill contributing seven.
Erin Wagner paced the Earlham offense with 30 assists as
Skyler Murray added eight.
Wagner also topped the Quakers with three service aces and 20 digs.
Jennifer Shamel helped the defense with 16 digs. Mulvihill had 13 digs and four blocks.
The first set of the evening was tight as the Polar Bears led the entire way. However, Earlham led early in the second before Ohio Northern took the set.
Earlham was able to capture the third set. After starting off with a 3-0 lead, the Quakers fell behind before finishing with a 10-2 run to claim it.
The final set was close most of the way as the Polar Bears maintained a slight edge to win the match.
The Quakers (0-1) travel to Cleveland for the Case Western Reserve Tournament this weekend.
On Friday Sept. 3, Earlham plays John Carroll University (2 p.m.) and Albion College (5:30 p.m.). The event concludes on Saturday as the Quakers face Bethany College (noon) and Case Western (2 p.m.).
