RICHMOND – The Earlham College volleyball team swept Anderson University in three sets on Senior Day in Druley Performance Gym on Wednesday evening.
The Quakers improved to 10-11 (3-2 HCAC) while the Ravens fell to 9-9 (1-4 HCAC).
Maria Young and
Aniyah Harrington both reached double digit kills on the evening to lead the Quakers. Young scored two serving aces while Harrington held the advantage in hitting percentage at .250.
Erin Wagner tallied 31 assists and 15 digs while
Jen Shamel collected 19 digs with four assists and an ace.
The Ravens battled closely through all three sets as Earlham won the match by a combined 13 points, and recorded just six more kills than Anderson.
Earlham out killed the Ravens 16-13 in set one en route to a four-point win. The Quakers jumped out to a 7-3 lead, and maintained a lead of 11-7 before a four-point run from Anderson. EC then went on a 6-2 run to extend its lead. Anderson worked up to a 21-19 lead before a six-point run from Earlham with Wagner on the sets to take the win in set one.
The EC offense struggled in set two with eight total attack errors in the set and a percentage of .077. Anderson used an early run to lead 6-3. The Quakers recovered over the set and scored a 5-1 run to lead 24-21. The Ravens tried to mount a comeback on set point, but were stopped short by a set-ending attack error.
The Quakers had their best offensive set in the final frame with a hitting percentage of .314 with 15 kills. The Quakers used five-straight points to lead the set 9-5 early on. EC then built on its momentum to continue growing the lead until a big kill from Harrington ended the match.
The Quaker seniors were honored before the match for Senior Day. Shamel, Wagner,
Sydney Fuller, and
Kaitlin Hicks were all recognized for their contributions to the program.
Earlham will have a quick turnaround with a match on Monday in Druley Performance Gym against Franklin College. First serve is slated for 7 pm.
