Bright leads WBB to win over Kenyon

RICHMOND – The Earlham College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the 2022-23 season with a 58-55 result over Kenyon College on Wednesday evening. 

Jay Bright led the Quakers with 20 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor. The sophomore also hauled in six rebounds and had a team-high three steals. Amari Bradford tallied 17 points with four boards and two assists. Neely Trenshaw led EC in rebounds with eight, the senior also tallied seven points. 

After a 7-7 tie four minutes into the contest, Kenyon worked a 7-0 run to lead 14-7 with a 3-pointer and a pair of layups. The Quakers mounted a run of their own in the final 3:27 of the quarter with scores from Bradford, Trenshaw, and Willow Runyon bringing EC to a 14-13 deficit. 

The Quakers stayed hot in the opening minutes of the second frame, and continued on to take a 26-16 lead. The Owls scored a 6-0 run and trailed the home squad 28-24 heading into the halftime break. 

Kenyon scored a 7-0 run to open the second half to lead 31-28. Earlham recovered with 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions starting at the 4:05 mark of the quarter. 

The Quakers began the final frame with a 10-1 run to lead 46-36. After a 5-0 run by Kenyon, the visitors trailed by five with 4:25 remaining in the contest. After entering the final 90 seconds with Earlham leading 54-48, Kenyon scored a jumper and a pair of free throws to trail 54-52. Sophomore Alexis Gibson iced the game for the Quakers with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 57-52 in the final 30 seconds of play. 

The Quakers will begin Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday at home against Manchester University. Tip-off is slated for 1 pm in Druley Performance Gym.
