MBB qualifies for postseason play

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Earlham College men's basketball team fell to Transylvania University 84-72 on Friday evening. Despite the loss, the Quakers have still qualified for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament as the seventh seed. Earlham will play Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the first round on Sunday.

The Quakers fell to 10-12 (6-9 HCAC) while the Pioneers improved to 15-8 (10-6 HCAC).

Jaden Terry led the Quake with 27 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. Freshman Kolden Vanlandingham continued his standout rookie season with 25 points and four rebounds.

Earlham jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and maintained its advantage through the first nine minutes of the half. At the midway point, Transylvania scored an 8-0 run over five minutes to take a 23-21 lead. Vanlandingham responded with a 3-pointer, but the Pioneers also hit a three on their next possession.

With the score tied at 30 with 1:50 remaining in the half, the Pioneers scored a 6-1 run to lead going into the break.

The action continued into the second half where the teams once again found themselves tied at the 16:38 mark. A 7-0 Pioneer run gave the home squad a 46-39 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

The Quakers then put up 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions while stopping the Transy offense to retake the lead 50-48. Terry hit the first two-long distance shots of the run and Vanlandingham finished it off.

After a 10-0 run for the Pioneers the score was 58-50 with under 10 minutes remaining. After falling behind, the Quakers struggled to keep pace with the Pioneers despite two 3-pointers from Vanlandingham in the final five minutes.

Earlham secures the seventh seed in the HCAC with the loss and will go on to face Rose-Hulman in the opening round on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 3 pm in Terre Haute.
