CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Earlham College women's lacrosse team scored a Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference win at Mount St. Joseph University on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers took an early lead and withstood a late surge from the Lions to win 16-15.
The Quakers improved to 2-9 (1-2 HCLC) while the Lions fell to 5-6 (2-1 HCLC).
Josie Whorton led the Quakers with seven goals scored off of 10 shots.
Serena Pisacano also played a major role in the offense with five goals and six assists.
Hannah Heyboer recorded 12 saves in goal and recorded her first career win.
After the Lions scored the opening goal of the contest, Earlham followed with four consecutive goals from Pisacano, Whorton and
Jillian Schlieper.
The home squad countered with two more goals before Pisacano gave Earlham a 5-3 lead with an unassisted goal with 1:18 remaining in the quarter.
Claudette Roskamp scored the second goal of her senior season with a man-up advantage midway through the second quarter.
With the Quakers leading 7-4, MSJ scored a 6-1 run stretching deep into the third quarter to retake the lead. The Quakers then took off with eight goals scored in 10 minutes of game time to lead 16-11 with 11:12 remaining in the contest.
The Lions tried to mount a comeback in the final 11 minutes, but the Quaker defense stopped four shots in the final minutes to preserve the lead.
The Quakers were outshot 43-32 and battled a turnover deficit of 31-25. Earlham led in ground balls 36-31 and took possession of 20 draw controls.
Earlham will be back in action next Saturday at Spalding. The conference contest is slated to begin at 1 pm in Louisville, Ky.
