Men's soccer heads into 2022 season

RICHMOND – The Earlham College men's soccer team approaches the 2022 season with an expanded coaching staff ready to take on its competition. 

THE SCHEDULE 

The opening week of games features two home contests on back-to-back nights in Matlak-Messer Stadium, against Asbury and Berea. The Quakers will play six home games to start the season.

The final non-conference game of the season is also the first away contest, sending the squad to Berea, Ohio to battle Baldwin Wallace University on September 24 at 7:00 pm. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate begins with Hanover College the following Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Richmond. 

The Quakers will host Mount St. Joseph University for Senior Day on October 1, and play their final home game of the season during homecoming festivities on October 15 against Franklin. 

THE PLAYERS

Goalkeeper Tyler Smith returns for his junior season after starting 15 games in the net for the Quakers last season. Smith recorded 97 saves in over 1,200 minutes of work in 2021. 

Caleb Wilgen was a stalwart in the midfield for the Quakers last season with the fourth-most playing time on the roster. Wilgen registered 18 shots on the season and earned all-conference honorable mention status at the conclusion of the season. 

Patrick Elster started seven games in jis junior campaign last season and scored his first collegiate goal at Anderson on 10/6/21. 

THE COACHES

Aaron Gustine returns for his fourth season leading the Quaker men's soccer team. New for the 2022 campaign, Andrew Longhurst and Darin Douglas join the squad as assistant coaches for Gustine. 

Longhurst was previously an assistant coach at the University of Maine Farmington after representing the Beavers on the field for four years. Douglas joins the program from Ferrum College where he played for the Panthers. 

HCAC POLL

The Quakers were picked to finish ninth in the HCAC preseason coaches poll with 17 votes. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was selected to win the conference with 80 total votes and eight first-place nods.
