Volleyball concludes Pam Briggs Classic

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Earlham College volleyball team defeated Capital University 3-1 before falling to Birmingham Southern College 3-0 on the final day of competition at the Pam Briggs Classic on Saturday. 

The Quakers now sit at 4-4 on the 2022 season.

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 3   CAPITAL 1  (25-17, 30-28, 24-26, 25-23)

Liv Kyrk recorded 16 kills in the extended match with only five errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Kyrk also was involved in two blocks that scored for the Quakers. Maria Young tallied 13 kills and first year player Jasmyn Meeker hit double-digits with 11 kills. 

Erin Wagner led in sets after putting up 45 assists in the morning contest. Jen Shamel and Mallory Cox led the Quaker backline with 19 and 16 digs respectively. 

The Quakers jumped out to a lead in the first set after scoring a four-point run. Earlham extended its lead again with a three-point run while leading 12-10. The Comet offense had no answer down the stretch as Earlham pulled away to a 25-17 win. 

After stretching out to a 7-2 lead, the Quakers slowed and found themselves trailing 19-15. Earlham then scored a 9-2 run and led 24-21. On set point, Capital scored four straight points to lead 25-24 before a kill from Meeker tied the set at 25. After a kill from Capital, the Quakers capitalized on a kill by Kyrk and an attack error by the Comets to win 30-28.

The Comets recorded their most efficient set of the contest in set three with a .146 hitting percentage. Earlham fell behind in the set, but used a 7-2 run to tie the score at 22. With a locked score again at 24, it was the Comets who prevailed the second time around with a set score of 26-24. 

Earlham took the lead off of an 8-1 run in the fourth set after trailing early. The Quakers led 15-12 before the home squad went on a 7-1 run to lead the set. The momentum quickly swung back in the favor of Earlham with a 5-0 run to lead 24-22. 


GAME TWO: EARLHAM 0   BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN 3  (19-25, 16-25, 22-25)

Meeker led the Quakers in their second match of the day with nine kills and a .138 hit percentage. As a team, Earlham attacked at a .068 clip during the contest. 

After falling behind 13-6 in the opening set, the Quakers scored a 6-2 run. EC then put together five straight points to trail 18-17. 

The Earlham offense struggled in the final two sets and hit at a .065 and -.033 respectively. 

Earlham will be back in action on Tuesday at home in Druley Performance Gym against Denison University at 7 pm.
