RICHMOND – The Earlham College men's lacrosse team won the first Quaker Bowl matchup in program history with a 9-3 final score against Wilmington College in Darrell Beane Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Quakers advance to 2-0 for the first time in program history.
Sam Sargent recorded a second consecutive four-goal game, and dished out three assists in the win.
Elijah Gamber and
Robert Gift both scored twice with one assist. Gift led the Quakers in shots with 13.
Emmitt Shaughnessy collected 16 saves, and allowed just three goals in the cage.
Donovan Shea led the team in caused turnovers with seven, and ground balls with nine, and won four faceoffs.
Earlham was outshot by Wilmington 42-36, but EC was successful on over double the number of clears as Wilmington.
Gift knocked in the first goal of the game with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter with an assist from Sargent. Then, Sargent got the goal on an assist from Gift in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
Wilmington scored with 9:44 remaining before halftime, and EC responded with two goals in the final five minutes of the frame.
Sargent and Gamber each added a goal in the third quarter. Wilmington scored in the final two minutes of the third quarter, and opened the fourth with a goal. Sargent and Gamber once again found the back of the cage in the fourth quarter, and Ben Atkins got a score with 5:41 left in the game.
The Quakers will return to action in Darrell Beane Stadium on Saturday to host Kalamazoo College at 4 pm. After Kalamazoo, EC will go on a 10-game road trip.
