RICHMOND – The Earlham College baseball team completed an opening-weekend sweep of Olivet College with two wins on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers took the victory 11-9 in game one, and won 9-3 in game two.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 11 OLIVET 9
Chance Strickley earned the win in game one of the afternoon with two strikeouts on three batters faced in the top of the eighth inning. Strickley came in after the Comets put up five runs in the inning to retake the lead.
Max Fries had another bountiful showing at the plate with two hits for three RBI and a home run. Freshman
Carter Vilevac had two hits for two RBI, including a double and scored one run.
Mitchell Roether recorded two hits, both doubles, and scored three runs.
The Quakers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Comets tied the game in the top of the fourth. Both teams plated a run in the sixth inning before Fries homered to contribute to a four-run seventh inning. The Comets rallied with five runs in the top of the eighth, but a two-run double from
Max Stewart gave Earlham its final lead in the bottom of the frame.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 9 OLIVET 3
Nick Carrizales scored the win in game two win 5.2 innings pitched in relief work. The graduate student allowed just four hits with five strikeouts. Carrizales used just 60 pitches to go nearly six innings in the game.
Christian Lancianese and Vilevac both recorded triples in the final game of the weekend and the pair combined for three RBI. Stewart recorded his first career home run over the left field wall of Sadler Stadium in the third inning.
The Quakers took the lead after the triple from Lancianese in the bottom of the second inning, and led through the remainder of the matchup.
The Quakers will be back in action next weekend for a four-game series with Illinois Institute of Technology beginning at noon on Saturday.
