ANDERSON, Ind. – Led by 13 hits, and a .333 team batting average, the Earlham College baseball team defeated Anderson University in game one of the weekend series 12-8 on Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers improved to 13-6 on the season while the Ravens fell to 11-8.
Dillon Fischer got the start at pitcher and threw five complete innings with five hits and five earned runs for the win.
Nick Carrizales threw three innings with only one run on three hits before a ninth-inning jam.
Cason Bennett finished the final frame with two strikeouts for the save.
Nathan Lancianese led the offense with three RBI and two runs scored. The senior had two hits on the day.
Max Fries had three hits for two RBI and a double, and freshman
Ian Bullis knocked in two runs with two hits.
With a combined two hits from either side in the first two innings, Earlham took the lead in the top of the third after
Nathan Lancianese hit an outfield single to bring
Easton Embry and
Zach Swearingen home. Lancianese came home on the next at bat with an RBI single from Fries.
The Quaker offense took off in the fourth inning with eight runs on five hits.
Mac Moore got the first run of the frame after a sac fly from Swearingen. The Quakers batted around the order in the inning, and Moore scored the final run of the frame after advancing on a wild pitch. Lancianese, Fries, Bullis, and
Michael Medley also recorded an RBI in the inning.
After allowing just four baserunners in the first three innings, the Quakers gave up three runs to Anderson in the bottom of the fourth inning. An infield single got the first run home, before a sac fly and an outfield single added to the tally.
Bullis hit an RBI single to right field in the top of the seventh inning to bring Fries in for his second run of the day.
Trailing 12-6 entering their last inning, the Ravens scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth before Bennett finished things off by striking out his only two batters faced.
Earlham will continue the series at Anderson tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
