RICHMOND, Ind. –
Devin Fitzgibbon delivered a game-winning goal in the 75th minute for Earlham College to come out on top over Mount St. Joseph University 2-1 in Matlack-Messer Stadium.
After a 0-0 tie at halftime,
Markku Laukkanen scored the first goal of the match in the 59th minute with help from an assist by Fitzgibbon. The Lions quickly responded with an equalizer on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
In the 75th minute of play,
Braden Guinn put a corner kick into play that skirted across the front of the Lion goal.
Steven Lewis and
Davin Olsen both took shots off the cross that were blocked by Lions defenders, but the second deflection bounced to Fitzgibbon waiting just outside the penalty area.
The senior unloaded for a near-post shot that was well out of reach of the MSJ goalkeeper, and put the Quakers on top 2-1.
Earlham outshot the Lions 15-10, and six Quakers took at least two shots.
In goal,
Ryland Wamsley collected four saves, and only conceded a goal on a penalty kick.
Earlham will continue play on Wednesday evening at Transylvania University. Kickoff against the Pioneers is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
