RICHMOND, Ind. – After taking a 2-0 lead in the third quarter, the Earlham College field hockey team fell 2-3 to Allegheny College in overtime on Sunday in Darrell Beane Stadium.
Beatrice Meeks put the Quakers ahead in the first quarter, scoring in the eighth minute of play after a penalty corner by
Meredith McGraw. Meeks caught a deflection out of the goal area, and took a quick shot on the near side for the score.
After leading 1-0 at halftime,
Leni Logsdon took a pass from McGraw on another penalty corner play, and took a shot from the top of the arch to give Earlham a 2-0 lead.
Allegheny scored its first goal of the game in the final 10 seconds of the third quarter.
With time winding down in the final frame, Allegheny gained possession and earned a penalty corner with just six seconds remaining. On the ensuing play, the Gators scored with one second on the clock.
In overtime,
Alex Ball earned a penalty corner on a breakaway attempt for the Quakers. Meeks took a shot on goal on the corner, but the attempt was saved. In the 64th minute of play, Allegheny drove downfield and got a forward past the Quaker defense on a through ball, and scored the winning goal.
Earlham outshot the Gators 13-7, and led 9-0 in the first half. The Quakers put 10 total shots on goal. Meeks led the offense with three shots, all on target.
Ainsley Kemp collected three saves in goal.
Earlham continues conference play on Wednesday at Ohio Wesleyan University. The contest is scheduled for 7 pm in Delaware, Ohio.
