RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College men's basketball team led for just 72 seconds in a 75-74 upset over Franklin College in Druley Performance Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers are now 3-1 in their last four contests, with one week left in the season.
The Quakers overcame a 16-point deficit in the second half to win off of a jump shot by
Ken Walker with 34 seconds remaining on the clock. Earlham then got a stop on defense to take possession back with eight seconds left. The Grizzlies fouled, but had not accumulated enough team fouls to send a Quaker to the free throw line until
Joffrey Nunnally stepped up with three seconds remaining. Nunnally missed the one-and-one shot, but Franklin hesitated on the rebound, and did not get an offensive opportunity.
Trailing 63-51 with 9:08 in the second half, the Quakers went on a 14-2 run to take a 68-67 lead with 5:08 remaining. The Quakers led three times for a total of 1:12, and only ever led by one point. Franklin controlled the score for over 94% of game time, and had a lead of 16 points in the second half.
Walker led the Quakers with 22 points, and a 3-for-3 mark from 3-point range. Walker collected four rebounds, two steals and five assists on the day.
Jackson Rhodes went 6-for-9 on 3-pointers with 19 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Kendell Cave led the team in rebounds with eight, and also scored 13 points. Nunnally collected six boards, and dished out a team-high nine assists.
As a team, the Quakers shot 48% on 3-pointers, and 41% on field goals.
Earlham will be back in Druley Performance Gym on Tuesday evening against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Engineers took a one-point win in Terre Haute back in January.
