RICHMOND, Ind. – With a go-ahead score in the final 20 seconds, the Earlham College men's basketball team won its second consecutive game with a 62-60 final score against Mount St. Joseph in Druley Performance Gym.
Two first year players,
Ken Walker and
Kendell Cave, led the Quakers in scoring with 18 points each. Walker was also responsible for three steals and three assists, while Cave brought in six rebounds.
Joffrey Nunnally scored 15 points with three boards.
Aidan Temple led the squad with seven rebounds.
The Quaker defense held the Lions to 0-for-14 on 3-pointers, and a 37% field goal percentage. MSJ did not attempt a 3-pointer in the final 10 minutes of play.
As a team, Earlham scored 32 points in the paint, and shot 44% on field goals.
With 1:30 remaining in the second half, the Lions drew a foul for the fourth consecutive possession. After making the free throws, the score was tied at 60.Each team then missed a jumper, and the Quakers called a timeout with 46 seconds remaining. Walker drove in for a difficult layup to give the Quakers the lead with just 18.4 seconds remaining.
Earlham's defense frustrated the Lions into calling a timeout with five seconds left, and did not allow a clean shot on the final possession.
After a 10-2 run by the Lions in the final minutes of the first half, Walker hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send the Quakers to halftime with a 35-31 lead. Earlham did not surrender the lead in the second half.
The Quakers will travel wo Anderson University on Wednesday for a 7:30 pm tip-off with the Ravens.
