RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team split its opening matchup of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action with Anderson University on Sunday afternoon.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 11 ANDERSON 2
Hayden Scalf earned the win in game one after tossing 7.2 innings with four hits and two earned runs. Scalf also scored five strikeouts.
Hans Carter threw 1.1 innings in relief with two hits and one strikeout.
On offense,
Ian Bullis scored two hits with three RBI and one run scored.
Phoenix Guzzi had two hits with two RBI and a stolen base.
Scalf gave up his only runs of the day on a two-run homer to left field in the first inning. The sophomore allowed just one hit after the first frame.
In the bottom of the first inning,
Jonathan Jimenez reached on a throwing error by the Ravens' catcher. On the play,
Sean Jeffries came home for the score. Earlham added two more runs on a double by
Reece Zonts to score
Max Fries and Jimenez.
Zonts hit another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. Bullis then hit an RBI-single to left field for the fifth Quaker run of the game.
In the fourth inning,
Quin Adelson hit an outfield single to bring home Jeffries and
Nate Whetstine to increase the Quaker lead. Bullis then added two more RBI in the sixth inning on a single.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Guzzi hit a two-RBI single to center field for an 11-2 score.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 4 ANDERSON 8
Kyle Jeffries earned his second start of the season in game two, and pitched 5.1 innings with five runs allowed.
David Lally threw 2.2 innings with one hit and four strikeouts. Guzzi came in for the final inning and scored one strikeout.
Bullis led the offense in game two with one hit and two RBI.
The Ravens plated four runs in the top of the first inning before Bullis hit a two-out pop-up that went unfielded and drove in two runs.
Anderson scored on a sacrifice fly in the third inning, and an RBI triple in the eighth inning.
After two hits early in the eighth inning, Earlham earned three straight walks which brought two runs home. Earlham then left three runners stranded on a flyout.
The Quakers will have a quick turnaround with a doubleheader at Bluffton University tomorrow beginning at 1 pm.
