Phulusa, Laukkanen combine for three goals against Wabash

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College men's soccer team continued play with a 5-3 loss to Wabash College in Matlack-Messer Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Little Giants notched their first goal in the 15th minute of play. The visitors then quickly added a second goal with a score in the 20th minute.

Leading 2-0 at halftime, Wabash scored two more goals within five minutes of the second half beginning.

Earlham got on the board in the 52nd play with an unassisted goal by Markku Laukkanen. Laukkanen intercepted a Wabash goal kick, and then unloaded a shot from the edge of the penalty area for a top-corner score.

In the 62nd minute, Rhoi Phulusa got a run down the far side line, and beat a pair of Wabash defenders to open a path toward goal, and delivered a scoring strike.

Phulusa struck again in the 66th minute with an assist from Laukkanen. Laukkanen drove down the far side of the field, and fired a cross to Phulusa, making a run inside the Wabash penalty area.

With its lead trimmed down to just a single goal, Wabash scored the final goal of the game in the 79th minute.

Laukkanen and Phulusa combined for nine total shots, and six shots on goal. The Quakers were outshot in the contest 14-13.
