FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Earlham College men's basketball team dropped an overtime battle at Franklin College with an 89-84 final result.
Ken Walker scored a new career high with 41 points, shooting 12-of-18, and 6-for-9 on 3-pointers. The sophomore hit 11 free throws and brought in five rebounds.
Donovan Pruitt scored 13 points with a team-high four assists.
Tavian Tatum brought down six boards, and scored 11 points.
After trailing 18-12 with 12:58 remaining in the first half, Earlham scored a 16-4 run to emerge with a 28-22 lead capped off by a 3-pointer by Walker with 5:58 remaining in the half. The Quakers increased the lead with an 8-2 run to lead 40-30 with just two seconds remaining in the frame.
After a 3-pointer by Walker, Franklin scored a 10-2 run to begin the second half, and by the 12:42 mark, the hosts retook the lead 48-47. Earlham recovered to take a 62-53 lead with 8:07 remaining in the game. With just under a minute remaining,
Travis Makabu hit a 3-pointer to give EC a 73-68 lead. Franklin made a pair of free throws, and forced a turnover and converted the layup. Leading 73-72, the Quakers committed a foul, and Franklin made a free throw to tie the score with 12 seconds remaining. On the final possession, Earlham missed a 3-point shot with a block by the Grizzlies.
Pruitt kicked off overtime with a 3-pointer, which was returned by the Grizzlies. Walker scored a pair of fastbreak-free throws to give the Quakers an 81-78 lead with 2:06 remaining in the overtime period. Franklin scored seven straight points, and led 85-81 with 37 seconds left on the clock. In the final 30 seconds, Franklin went 4-for-6 on free throws while holding the Quakers scoreless.
Earlham will continue play on Wednesday evening at Bluffton University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
