RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team kicked off its 2025 season with a sweep of The University of Olivet on Opening Day in Sadler Stadium.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 19 OLIVET 7
Hayden Scalf opened the season with four innings on the mound. The junior allowed five hits with four earned runs and one strikeout.
Christopher Snider threw four innings in relief, and scored three strikeouts with three hits and two earned runs.
Mac Moore went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Quin Adelson scored three hits, including the first homer of the season, with two RBI.
Nate Whetstine went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and one walk.
The Quakers put up six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Earlham earned five walks and two runs before
Sean Jeffries put a single through the left side of the infield for two runs. Adelson allowed an extra run to score by getting caught in a pickle between first and second, and stalling for Jeffries to reach home on the play.
With the bases loaded in the third, Moore hit an outfield single to score two runs. The left fielder hit an infield single for an RBI his next appearance in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Whetstine blasted a double deep down the left field line to score two and put the Quakers up 10-2.
The Quakers put four in a row on base in the fifth inning with an error, single, hit-by-pitch, and walk to start the frame. Adelson then added to the lead again with a solo homer over the Maroon Monster to bring the score to 12-5 in the seventh.
After two Olivet runs in the top of the eight, the Quakers tallied two hits to set up
Jonathan Jimenez for a three-run homer, just the third deep shot of his career. Then, with runners on the corners,
Mitchell Roether delivered a blast over the Monster on the left field line for three runs and a run-rule win. The hit was initially called foul, but was overturned by umpire discussion after Roether hit the foul pole in left field.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 7 OLIVET 3
Kyle Jeffries went 5.1 innings with four hits and two earned runs in game two, striking out six in the win.
David Lally earned a save with 1.1 innings of relief work, entering with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning. Lally held the Comets to one hit, and scored a strikeout.
Roether went 3-for-4 in game two with two RBI. Jimenez stayed hot with a triple, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Jeffries earned one hit and one RBI, and stole four bases.
After leaving a runner on base in each of the first two innings, the Quakers finally hit paydirt in the third after a triple by Jimenez set up and RBI-single for Jeffries. After stealing a pair of bases, Jeffries scored on an RBI single by Roether.
With runners on first and second, Jimenez hit his second homer of the day over the Maroon Monster to lift the Quakers to a 5-0 lead.
The Quakers waited until the bottom of the sixth inning to add to the lead with an RBI-double by Adelson to left field. Adelson then scored from second on an RBI-single by Roether to right field.
The Quakers host Olivet again tomorrow for another doubleheader in Sadler Stadium. First pitch is set for 12 pm..
