Volleyball finishes IWU Tournament 1-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Earlham College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Greenville University after a pair of losses to ranked opponents to begin the season. 

MATCH ONE: EARLHAM 2 CHICAGO 3 (28-26, 25-18, 29-15, 23-25, 14-16)

Addison Piatt did it all in match one, setting new career highs in kills with 22 and digs with 26. The sophomore hit at a .391 clip with two aces and three blocks. Anniyah Harrginton and Caylee Brandes both scored 19 kills and had 3+ blocks. 

Ava Walters dished out 28 assists, and Sydney Bleyle accounted for 23 assists. Madison Bizjak collected 23 digs in the back line. 

The Quakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after winning the opening two sets against the No.20 ranked team in the AVCA preseason poll. The Quakers scored 18 kills as a team in set one, and committed just two errors in set two for a .288 attack percentage. 

After falling in the opening sets, the Maroons posted a .353 attack percentage in the third set to go along with 14 kills, a match high for Chicago. In the fifth and final set, Chicago took a 10-5 lead before an 8-2 run by the Quakers. Trailing 13-12, Chicago scored a 4-1 run to end the match. 

MATCH TWO: EARLHAM 3 GREENVILLE 1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 25-23)

Brandes led the attack in match two, swinging at a .429 clip with 16 kills and a single error. The junior hitter also posted five blocks. Piatt and Harrington scored 10 kills each. Walters narrowly led the setters with 23 assists while Bleyle posted 22. 

Bizjak led the back line with 26 digs, and Piatt collected 13. 

The Quaker offense attacked at a .245 clip with double digit kills in sets one three and four.

The Quakers finished the opening weekend with a 1-2 record, playing against top ranked opponents in the country. 

Bizjak and Piatt were named to the all-tournament team following competition. 

Earlham will be back in action at DePauw University on Tuesday for a 7 pm match.
