Baseball falls to US Merchant Marine Academy in Florida

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Earlham College baseball team dropped its second matchup of Spring Break to the United States Merchant Marine Academy 6-3 on Monday morning. 

Kyle Jeffries went six innings with nine hits and four earned runs while scoring six strikeouts. Garrett Odey came in for the final inning and tallied two strikeouts with two hits. 

Jonathan Jimenez went 2-4 with a double, one run scored and one steal. Dylan Rieck went 2-3.

The Mariners scored one run in the bottom of the third inning on four hits, and scored two runs on a double in the bottom of the fourth. 

Jimenez led off the fifth inning with a single, and stole second before scoring on a single by Ian Bullis. Sean Jeffries then hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for a 3-2 Mariners lead. 

USMMA scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Quakers scored one run on one hit and an error in the top of the seventh. 

The Mariners ended the day with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

The Quakers continue their Spring Break trip in Florida against Lasell University tomorrow at 10 am. 

On Sunday, the Quakers opened their trip with a 17-5 loss to Washington College. 

Cayman Huntsman started and went five innings with seven hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts. 

Mitchell Roether went 2-4 with a three-run homer. Sean Jeffries went 1-3 with two steals and a run scored. 

The Quakers scored one run in the second and the third innings, but Washington rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Leading 8-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Washington scored nine runs to end the game early.
